Qatar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has issued a statement calling for Israel’s nuclear facilities to be placed under the oversight of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and for Israel to accede to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT).
In a recent official statement dated March 9, the Qatari Foreign Ministry urged the international community to increase efforts to ensure that all of Israel’s nuclear facilities are safeguarded by the IAEA and that the regime joins the NPT.
Based on this statement, Qatar’s ambassador to the United Nations, Jassem Yaqub Al-Hammadi, emphasized the necessity of fulfilling the commitments of the international community and organizations within the framework of UN Security Council resolutions during a meeting of the IAEA Board of Governors.
Previously, the UN General Assembly, the IAEA, and the 1995 NPT Review Conference called on the Zionist regime to place its nuclear facilities under the control of the IAEA.
In this context, Qatar’s UN ambassador noted that some of these resolutions explicitly call on the Zionist regime to join the NPT to provide a genuine guarantee against the proliferation of nuclear weapons in the Middle East. Al-Hammadi also added that all regional countries, except for the Zionist government, are parties to the NPT and have effective guarantee agreements with the Agency.
While reading the statement, Qatar’s ambassador criticized the Zionist regime’s aggressive policies against the Palestinian people and UNRWA, including efforts by the far-right Zionist cabinet to forcibly displace the Palestinian population and escalate military operations against cities and refugee camps, as well as restricting humanitarian assistance to the western coast of Gaza.
Despite possessing nuclear weapons, the Zionist regime has yet to join the NPT, and its nuclear facilities are not registered with the IAEA.
Given Qatar’s facilitation in ceasefire negotiations and its significant support for Hamas during the Gaza conflict, the Israeli regime has recently accused Qatar of instigating provocations and obstructing the implementation of the ceasefire agreement. In this context, the Zionist regime has attempted to manage the negotiation process to its advantage by undermining Qatar’s facilitation through various pretexts.
