Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has praised Armenia’s decision to officially recognize the State of Palestine, calling it a significant step towards acknowledging the Palestinian people’s right to their land and the necessity of ending Israeli occupation.
In a letter to Armenian President Vahagn Khachaturyan, Abbas expressed gratitude for the move, which brings the number of countries recognizing Palestine to 149 out of 193 UN member states.
Armenia’s recognition reflects its commitment to achieving justice, human rights, and friendly relations with the Palestinian people, Abbas said.
The Palestinian leader also expressed hope that other countries would follow Armenia’s lead, urging for security, peace, and coexistence in the region.
The move comes as Israel faces international condemnation for its ongoing offensive on Gaza, which has resulted in over 37,600 Palestinian deaths and 86,100 injuries since October 2022.
