The Jordanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a strongly worded statement on Saturday, condemning the Israeli army’s shelling near the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) office in Gaza. The attack, which occurred on Friday, resulted in numerous casualties and injuries and damaged the organization’s headquarters.
The ministry condemned “in the strongest terms” the Israeli occupation forces’ systematic targeting of civilians and relief facilities in the Gaza Strip, describing the incident as a “flagrant violation” of the 1949 Geneva Convention for the protection of civilians in time of war.
The statement emphasized that such attacks reflect a culture of impunity and called for “immediate and effective action” from the international community, particularly the UN Security Council, to protect civilians and relief facilities providing vital support to Palestinians.
The ICRC office in Gaza, which is surrounded by hundreds of displaced civilians, was severely damaged by shelling. According to the organization, heavy-caliber projectiles landed meters away from its office and residences late on Friday, causing damage to the structure.
The ICRC stated that its office, which houses many Palestinian colleagues, was hit by shelling despite being surrounded by hundreds of displaced civilians living in tents.
Israel has continued its military campaign in Gaza, disregarding a UN Security Council resolution demanding an immediate cease-fire. The conflict has resulted in over 37,500 Palestinian deaths, mostly women and children, and nearly 86,000 injuries, according to local health authorities.
Eight months into the war, Gaza remains devastated, with vast areas destroyed and a crippling blockade imposed on essential necessities like food, clean water, and medicine.
