United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has expressed “profound” concern over the growing tensions between Israel and Hezbollah along the Blue Line, warning that a wider regional conflict could have catastrophic consequences. Guterres emphasized that the people of the region and the world cannot afford for Lebanon to become another Gaza, where civilians have suffered extensively due to the ongoing conflict.
Guterres highlighted the risks of unexploded ordnance and remnants of war posing threats to people in both Israel and Lebanon, as well as UN personnel. He urged full implementation of Security Council resolution 1701 and an immediate cessation of hostilities to protect civilians. The UN chief also stressed that a military solution will only guarantee more suffering and devastation for communities in Lebanon and Israel.
Guterres called for reason and rationality, emphasizing that the cessation of hostilities and progress toward a permanent cease-fire is the only durable solution. He reaffirmed the UN’s support for diplomacy to end violence, restore stability, and prevent further humanitarian suffering.
The UN chief’s comments come as tensions continue to escalate along Lebanon’s border with Israel following cross-border attacks between Hezbollah and Israeli forces. Iran’s mission to the UN warned Israel against making an “imprudent decision” that could lead to a new war, stating that Hezbollah has the capability to defend itself and Lebanon.
The situation in Gaza remains dire, with over 37,400 Palestinian deaths since last October following an attack by Hamas. The international community has condemned Israel’s actions, and the UN Security Council has demanded an immediate cease-fire.
