The protest unfolded in Portland, Oregon, and was described by Azar as a poignant display of solidarity among veterans gathered against war.
The event featured emotionally charged speeches, including one from a Vietnam War veteran affiliated with the SDS, known for their anti-war activism.
Aaron Bushnell’s tragic death occurred when he set himself on fire outside the Israeli Embassy in Washington, DC.
Prior to this act, Bushnell released a video explaining his intentions, expressing his refusal to remain complicit in Israeli genocide.
Declaring his imminent engagement in an extreme act of protest, Bushnell compared his actions to the ongoing suffering endured by Palestinians under colonization.
He live streamed the event on Twitch, but the footage was subsequently removed. Witnesses reported seeing Bushnell approach the embassy, douse himself with a flammable substance, and ignite, repeatedly chanting “Free Palestine” as flames engulfed him.
Hailing from San Antonio, Texas, Bushnell’s death on Sunday, February 25, was confirmed by the Metropolitan Police Department in Washington.
